COMPETITIVE MOAT
↑Extensive infrastructure network
WM operates a vast network of landfills, transfer stations, and recycling facilities. This extensive infrastructure creates significant barriers to entry for competitors.
↑Regulatory hurdles and permits
Obtaining permits for waste disposal sites is a complex and lengthy process. WM's established operations benefit from these stringent regulatory requirements.
↑Economies of scale
The sheer volume of waste WM handles allows for significant cost efficiencies in collection, processing, and disposal. This scale is difficult for smaller players to replicate.
INVESTMENT RISKS
↓Commodity price fluctuations
Revenue from recycled materials is subject to volatile commodity prices. A downturn in these markets can negatively impact profitability.
↓Environmental regulations and liabilities
Stricter environmental laws and potential cleanup costs pose ongoing risks. WM must continually invest in compliance and remediation.
↓Competition and market saturation
While barriers exist, competition from regional players and new technologies can pressure pricing and market share.

The trailing twelve-month PE ratio of WM reflects how much investors pay per dollar of Waste Management, Inc.'s earnings. This metric is most useful when compared to Waste Management peers and the company's own historical range.
WM's PE of 31.3x combined with a PEG ratio of 7.73 provides a growth-adjusted perspective. A PEG above 2.0 suggests WM may be richly valued even accounting for growth. Keep in mind that PE-based valuation works best for profitable, mature companies — for high-growth or cyclical Waste Management, a DCF analysis may be more appropriate.
To value Waste Management, Inc. using PE: (1) Compare the current PE (31.3x) against the Waste Management median to assess relative pricing, (2) check the PEG ratio (7.73) to adjust for growth expectations, (3) review the 5-year PE range to identify where the stock sits historically, and (4) estimate fair value by multiplying a target PE by forward EPS estimates. This relative approach complements DCF's absolute valuation.
WM's PEG ratio is 7.73, calculated by dividing the PE ratio (31.3x) by the expected earnings growth rate. A PEG above 2.0 often signals the stock is priced aggressively relative to its growth trajectory. Note that PEG accuracy depends on the reliability of growth estimates.
PE ratio gives a quick relative read — how WM is priced versus Waste Management peers. DCF provides an absolute value based on projected free cash flows. For WM, with a strong ROE of 28.9%, both methods are worth using — PE for a market-relative check, DCF to stress-test whether fundamentals justify the price. Each method has blind spots: PE ignores capital structure and cash flow quality, while DCF is sensitive to growth and discount rate assumptions.
P/E and DCF value WM with different methods and assumptions, so the two conclusions can differ. Compare the DCF intrinsic value.
